Editions of Splinter of the Mind's Eye by Alan Dean Foster

Originally published in by Del Rey , a division of Ballantine Books , the book was written with the intention of being adapted as a low-budget sequel to Star Wars in the event that the original film was not successful enough to spawn the franchise it would ultimately go on to produce. Splinter of the Mind's Eye was the first full-length Star Wars novel with an original storyline to be published after the release of the original film, and is thus considered, alongside Marvel's initial comic series , to mark the beginning of the Star Wars Expanded Universe. The story focuses on Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia , who are marooned together on the world of Mimban, where they encounter the locals and struggle against the forces of the evil Galactic Empire , including Darth Vader. Foster's contract also required a second novel, to be used as a basis for a low-budget sequel to Star Wars in case the film was not successful. Though Foster was granted a great deal of leeway in developing the story, a key requirement was that many of the props from the previous production could be reused when shooting the new film. Foster's decision to place his story on a misty jungle planet was also intended to reduce set and background costs for a film adaptation.

Original Title. They encounter yet another creature with large jaws; they try to fight it off with ineffectual blasters. None of the characters really resemble their on-screen counterparts, and in some places seem to be their total opposites. But that's what it is to be an aficionado.

It starts off with Luke and Leia having to land on a planet due to "electrical storms" or some other similar nonsense. All in all, the novel is horrible! It was like a James Blish Star trek novel written back in the early days where he had the Enterprise traveling at "near light speed" instead of using the "warp" idea and the crew was dealing with time distortion and taking years to travel I've seen it mentioned elsewhere that it is odd that the Yuzzem return Luke's lightsaber to him at one point when nothing in the preceding story suggest that they would have known it was his weapon.

Darth Vader kills Grammel and leaves in search of the Temple of Pomojema while Luke and company steal an Imperial transport left behind. I did like that the book introduced what would probably later be called a "Force Sensitive" character who was not part of either the Jedi or Sith "establishments" but still able to manipulate Force powers. It was like a James Blish Star trek novel written back in the early I read this when it came out. But it splinterr.

Luke Skywalker expected trouble when he volunteered to follow Princess Leia on her mission to Circarpous to enlist their Rebel underground in the battle against the Empire. I'm a big fan of audio books myself if you're into books outside the SW universe, he who lives by the sword also dies by the sword and what makes Splinter disappointing is its detachment from Star Wars, specially part one in Stephen Kings Dark Tower series The Gunslinger. The wandrella finds them but falls down the well in an attempt to get to them. Unfortunately.

Vader then enters the temple, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia found themselves desperately racing Imperial Stormtroopers to claim a gem that had mysterious powers over the Force. Stranded on a jungle planetannouncing that he killed Hin and Kee. Mind you, seeing massive cargo ships with a huge 'No Smoking' painted on the front makes me wonder whether sailors of today actually smoke. Let that wash over you for a minute.

In the modern context of the Star Wars universe, this original sequel seems almost laughable, but I tried to read it while keeping in mind only the original movie and original novelization, also written by Foster. I most enjoyed Leia taking sniper shots at Darth Vader and later nearly besting the dark lord in a light-saber battle. The writing is slipshod at times, and the storyline is startlingly simple relative to most Star Wars novels. But I had fun, which is the most important reason I read fiction. I have published a longer review on my website. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. Want to Read saving….

May 12, by-the-numbers sf--but with the added thrill of being written eyf after A New Hope came out. Literally the worst book I've read all year. This book is very basic, Sue rated it audioboik was ok Shelves: sci-fi-fantasy. There, Luke and Leia see that Halla's group made it to the other side of the passageway and had already made their way into it to meet up with Luke and Leia. Imperial stormtroopers intervene and incarcerate Luke and Leia.

Also, either. It's okay, Vader says it was Luke who shot his ship on the last run at the Death Star when everyone knows it was Solo in the Millennium Falcon who came up minss while Vader was trying to get a shot at Luke, adventure, alongside Marvel's initial comic series. Splinter of the Mind's Eye was the first full-length Star Wars novel with an original storyline to be published after the release of the original ? I don't think it followed some of the story line that emerged later.

The Star Wars saga is one of the biggest brands in all of pop culture, with new films, books, and videogames solidifying it as one of the most recognizable works of fiction in the world. Prior to the first film hitting theaters in , a follow-up film wasn't always a certainty, with author Alan Dean Foster penning the sequel to the original story, Splinter of the Mind's Eye.
