“The Lion and the Mouse” at Usborne Children’s Books

In the story, a mouse's life is a spared by a lion. Later, after the lion is trapped, the mouse is able to set the lion free. Adapting the fable, with the moral that the weak can help the strong, as a wordless picture book was seen as a successful way of overcoming the brief plot generally found in the source stories. While it was Pinkney's first wordless picture book, it was not the first time he had told the story, having previously included it in his Aesop's Fables , published in Pinkney, who had received five Caldecott Honors , became the first African American to win the Caldecott Medal for his illustrations in the book.

The lion is later rewarded for his compassionate act by being rescued from poachers by the persistence of his kouse friend who chews him free of a net.

I really mluse this book because it is an old story that we have seen before. No trivia or quizzes yet. Instead of having a meal, the lion spares the mouse's life and in return the mouse comes to the lions rescue when he is caught in a rope trap hanging helpless in the trees. Average rating 4.

But for once, I think I should point out that a positive review is all the MORE impressive when it comes from someone who not usually a fan of a particular author or illustrator. Fables were one of my favorites as a child, it is closer to the real lions and mice. A must have, and I hope I can incorporate these texts into my classroom. So, and a must purchase. I also suspect that the stories that my son is telling during the day are part of the do-it-yourself storytelling this book has helped open up in our home.

  2. Add to Registry. It is a true easy reader--many sight words and a few new words that can be sounded out, and a couple that needed a mommy's help. Later on the lion gets bit with rope. He takes Aesop's tale and turns it into an almost completely wordless book where the watercolor illustrations draw the reader in to tell the story.
