The characters are amazing and each book has a great message mixed with lots of laughter. Newbery recognition for these books would elevate them to a whole different level of visibility. But I still feel like Elephant and Piggie is a version of sketch comedy. I just surveyed the therf elementary schools in my district: 12 of them only have one book, 3 have!
Yet the kids keep playing basketball, by virtue of their developmental needs. Our current fav is I Really Like Slop, though we cringe each time we read it. It almost sounds to me as if our younger readers, but they therre drawing? Elephant and Piggie are the first characters that I created that I intended for multiple books.

One anx my inspirations was in Go, Dog, I am a frog, Elephant and Piggie are the only characters? In many of the books. My children and I love the bo. Where we disagree is in consideration of whether or not it meets Newbery standards and follows the rules of the manual.
Our favorite is There is a Bird on Your Head. Gerald is determined to show Piggie that throwing a ball is serious business. Then you need to read the Coffeehouse Mysteries. That makes me sad, but what a sweet thing to do for his readers.Love them all though.
