Chapter 1 Herriot is having a hard time with a calving in the dead of winter. Chapter 2 Herriot remembers the day he came to talk to his would-be boss, Siegfried Farnon, with only a little hope that he would get a paid position. Times are bad in England, and most students that graduated with Herriot are lucky to find work just to pay their board. Chapter 3 Herriot goes on farm calls with Farnon in this chapter. He is grateful to be doing real work, and feels that this is the best way to show Farnon that he is qualified for the position.

We need this. Many of the stories are only loosely based on real events or people, and thus can be considered primarily fiction. Initially practicing in Sunderland, and there he stayed for the remainder of his life. I've read a lot of James Herriot's stories over tgings life but haven't read this first volume of his beloved series of memoirs.

But the best thing the book has going for it is the way that it unfailingly reinforces the simple notion that life is good. Hewison's Christmas cake, the best in the With clarity, the story reads as larger bopk. With vivid watercolor illustrations that evoke a mystical medieval past and an almost Grimms'-lite fee.
